Creating Change: Thomas Lobai Lowi’s Mission in Healthcare

Thomas is a passionate healthcare provider from South Sudan, currently pursuing a Higher Diploma in Family Health for Clinical Officers (FHCO) at Kijabe College of Health Sciences (KCHS). His journey in healthcare began long before he set foot in Kenya—he has been impacting lives for years! In 2018, while still a student, Thomas co-founded Medical Mission, a life-changing initiative providing medical care and spiritual support to some of South Sudan’s most vulnerable communities. “We started this as a team of friends, setting up mobile clinics to treat malaria, diarrhea, and other illnesses in remote villages,” he shares. His mission didn’t stop there. In 2023, he participated in several initiatives to support his community, including the Safe Motherhood Program, which helped mothers deliver safely—especially critical since the nearest health facility was 40 km away! “Beyond that, we tackled teen pregnancies, STIs, and mental health challenges through school health programs and mobile clinics across Kapoeta, my hometown in South Sudan,” he adds. So why did he choose FHCO at our facility? “I first heard about Kijabe Hospital back in 2013 when a friend from South Sudan brought a child here for treatment. I witnessed the hospital’s life-changing impact firsthand. When it came time for my own training, I wanted more than just a degree—I needed hands-on, practical experience to help transform healthcare in South Sudan. The program’s community-centered approach, strong mentorship, and spiritual integration aligned perfectly with my vision,” he explains. Now, Thomas is gaining essential skills, mentorship, and clinical experience here, preparing to return home and expand his mission. The FHCO program is equipping professionals like Thomas to serve where they are needed most!
