Description
Quinsy, also called peritonsillar abscess, is a complication of untreated tonsillitis where pus collects near the tonsils, leading to severe throat pain and difficulty swallowing. It is caused by bacterial infections, primarily Streptococcus pyogenes. Symptoms include: Severe sore throat (often on one side), Swollen, painful tonsils with pus formation, Difficulty swallowing, drooling, and muffled voice, and Swollen lymph nodes and fever. Doctors diagnose quinsy through throat examination and imaging (ultrasound, CT scan). Treatment includes draining the abscess, antibiotics, and pain relief medications.
