Type 1 Diabetes
Description
Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This leads to a lack of insulin, a hormone necessary for allowing glucose to enter cells for energy. Without insulin, glucose builds up in the blood, leading to high blood sugar levels which can cause numerous health issues if not managed properly. Symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination, hunger, weight loss, and blurred vision. Type 1 Diabetes usually develops in children or young adults, although it can occur at any age. Management involves lifelong insulin therapy, either through injections or an insulin pump, along with monitoring blood glucose levels, a balanced diet, and regular physical activity. Research continues on potential preventive measures and treatments to cure or halt the progression of this condition.
