Hepatitis
Description
Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, commonly caused by viral infections (Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E), alcohol abuse, autoimmune disorders, or toxic substances. The liver is responsible for filtering toxins, and hepatitis can disrupt its function, leading to serious complications like liver failure or liver cancer. Symptoms include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, and loss of appetite. Chronic hepatitis can cause cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) and liver failure. Diagnosis includes blood tests, liver function tests, and imaging (ultrasound or liver biopsy). Treatment depends on the type: antiviral drugs (Hepatitis B, C), supportive care (Hepatitis A, E), or lifestyle changes (alcohol-related hepatitis). Vaccines are available for Hepatitis A and B.
