X-linked Agammaglobulinemia (XLA)

Description

X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA) is a rare genetic disorder that affects the immune system, preventing the body from producing B cells (which make antibodies). This results in frequent and severe infections. Symptoms include: Repeated bacterial infections (pneumonia, sinusitis, and ear infections), chronic lung infections leading to lung damage, and Delayed growth and developmental issues in severe cases. Doctors diagnose XLA using blood tests to measure B cell levels and genetic testing. Treatment involves lifelong immunoglobulin (antibody) replacement therapy to prevent infections, along with antibiotics as needed.
